Autism Society of PEI sharing resource supports with Island schools

As Autism Awareness Month wraps up for the month of October the Autism Society of PEI will be sharing new supports with Island schools to promote greater awareness, education and understanding about Autism.
“An important part of what we do as a Society is to help people learn more about Autism and understand better how it affects people,” said Jeff Himelman, President of the Autism Society of PEI. “The more information and support we can provide to schools, students and families the better equipped people are to understand and adapt,” said Himelman.
Over the next few weeks staff from the Autism Society will be delivering to Island elementary schools copies of the Autism Acceptance book and package of relevant information on autism services here on Prince Edward Island.
The Autism Acceptance Book (by Ellen Sabin) is an activity book, a conversation-starter, and an educational tool that engages children in learning to embrace people’s differences and treat others with respect, compassion and kindness. It helps children see that we are all different from each other and we all like to be understood and accepted. It teaches children about Autism; helps them imagine how things might feel for those with autism and lets them think of ways to be understanding and accepting to people with Autism. Ideal for classrooms and group setting, this book should be shared with every child as it will help them learn important life lessons and help soften the stigma of Autism and other special needs.
“It’s our hope that by having better information about Autism in the hands of classroom and resource teachers that this can help improve the learning environment and student success,” said Nathalie Walsh, Executive Director of the Autism Society of PEI.
To learn more or if you have questions or want to request delivery of a copy of the package please contact Nathalie at 566-4844 or email Nathalie@autismsociety.pe.ca.
