The City of Charlottetown is pleased to announce a partnership between community organizations to fulfill a British Columbia student’s dream to visit Prince Edward Island.
The Autism Society of PEI, City of Charlottetown, Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club, and Stars for Life Foundation will host a fundraising barbeque event on Thursday, June 5 at the Charlottetown Fire Department, 89 Kent Street, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Money raised will be used to fund a PEI family vacation for Brooklyn Mavis.
The 15-year-old British Columbian student was scheduled to participate in a student exchange last month that did not occur due to circumstances beyond her control. Brooklyn, who has autism and epilepsy, was devastated that her wish to visit PEI would not happen. That’s when community groups and the City of Charlottetown decided to join forces to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion and raise funds to help Brooklyn have a positive Island experience.
“Inclusion matters,” said Faye Williams, Vice-President of the Autism Society of PEI. “We’re very pleased to be able to work with the City of Charlottetown and other community partners to show Brooklyn our world famous Island hospitality and help make Brooklyn’s dream a reality.”
Donations will be accepted by the Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club at the barbeque on June 5.
